Chapter 13

Edryd was sheepish as he explained what had happened to his wife and the events that had led up to the attack. The group of visitors all listened quietly to him and waited until he was finished before they asked any questions.

“Then there is a traitor amongst our own people,” Derwyn growled and clenched his fists.

“That would seem to be the case, but I do not know who,” Edyrd shrugged.

“We will find out who it is, and they will be made to pay for their treachery,” Arwyn said forcefully.

“Perhaps we should not spring to violence quite so quickly,” Mr Brown cautioned and received reproachful looks from all three Evans men.

“I think Mr Brown is right. We may be able to use the traitor far more effectively to provide us with information rather than simply have us meeting out vengeance against his flesh,” Lady Sarah said thoughtfully.

“But how would we find such a traitor?” Richard Hales asked with a frown.

“We set a trap for him, just as you might if you were hunting in a forest,” Mr Hunter replied.

“To set a trap, you need bait,” Mr Brown replied pointedly.

"Perhaps it would be better if we did not focus on the traitor, for now, we have more important things to deal with first," Edward replied tactfully.

“You think there is something more important than finding the man who sold his soul to evil men and harmed our mother?” Derwyn asked with narrowed eyes.

“I think discovering what happened to the children of Ashdown and looking for Grace and Millie should be our first priority,” Thomas argued.

“And in the meantime we allow a traitor to stay here at the farm and risk the lives of everyone here?” Arwyn asked with disbelief.

“Peace, gentlemen, please,” Lady Sarah begged as she held her hands up to silence the men and try to calm the tension that was building in the room.

“Arguing will get us nowhere, but I do not think the farm should be left unattended. Perhaps we should divide our resources to use them effectively,” Gordon suggested thoughtfully.

“What do you suggest?” Sylvia asked.

“The doctor and ladies should stay here, Lady Sarah, Sylvia and the doctor should care for Bronwyn and watch over Edryd. Derwyn can take over running the farm and Miss DeVille can take on the duties that Bronwyn would ordinarily take care of. Mr Hunter and I should take some men and the bandits and explore the area to look for signs of anything strange, the bandits certainly know more than they have told us, but we can use their knowledge to search,” Gordon replied.

“To look for the children or Grace and Millie?” Oliver asked.

“Both,” Gordon said quickly.

“What will the rest of us do?” Richard asked with a raised eyebrow.

“Arwyn and the Baker boys can talk to the rest of the farmhands under the guise of work and gather information to try and find the traitor amongst the men here,” Gordon suggested.

“And those of us that were not raised to work the land?” Edward asked hopefully.
